Marijuana, in the recent times, has gained a lot of attention as a medicine herb rather than a weed enjoyed for its buzz. With a series of studies and researches performed, it has now been proved by universities and labs that certain strains of the Cannabis plant are truly great pain relievers and have the ability to prevent and cure a wide number of health conditions including Cancer, Alzheimer’s, Crohn’s disease, seizures, and many more.
Despite these proven facts about the beneficial effects of the plant, there has always been a little commotion surrounding its use as a medicine for heart conditions. In the past, there have been records stating that marijuana increases the risk of heart attacks in patients. However, in the recent times, the new researches have shown a very contradicting report, stating that Marijuana may have similar effect as certain drugs consumed to prevent heart conditions.
Scientists believe that Marijuana contains a huge variety of compounds that may provide better and newer treatments for several heart diseases. The initial experiments were performed on animals and the results suggested that the cannabinoids (components in marijuana) are capable of protecting our heart against a wide range of heart conditions such as strokes, heart attacks, hypertension and also atherosclerosis.
Research Was Further Continued on Humans
The research was further continued on humans and the scientists working at the University of Nottingham School of Medicines have proved that these cannabinoids have the same effect on humans as well.
A class of the drugs, known as Vasodilators are already being used to treat hypertension, heart failure and also angina. Relaxing the blood vessels, automatically helps lower your body’s blood pressure and also increasing the blood circulation. However, the paper does mention that the role of cannabinoids in fighting heart conditions is still not very clear and requires further research.
Apart from these experiments, research was also done on the use of Cannabinoids that are produced naturally by the body, the 2-AG (2-Arachidonoylglycerol) in comparison to the Cannabinoids that are extracted from the Marijuana plant.
These researches simply prove that the Cannabis plant is truly of great medicinal value, and has a lot of potential to treat several health conditions. However, before the plant is used as a medicine for curing certain diseases, it requires proper research. Without proper research and the approval from the medical panels, using cannabis can prove to be a little risky.
